Specialist GPs with a special interest in ADHD are now able to diagnose Adult ADHD and initiate stimulant medication treatment, under new Medsafe/Pharmac regulations effective from 1st February 2026.


Clinical Background of Dr Johnston

Dr Johnston brings a unique depth of expertise to ADHD care, combining extensive mental health training with comprehensive general practice experience.

His journey in psychiatry began during medical school and continued through two psychiatry rotations as a junior doctor in the United Kingdom. Accepted for both specialist psychiatry and GP vocational training pathways, he chose the GP route (which eventually led him to NZ) whilst maintaining his passion for mental health.

Dr Johnston regularly consults on mental health matters and is highly regarded by his patients for his compassionate approach to care.

Services Offered

  • Initial diagnosis and mangement - $499: A comprehensive ADHD assessment and management plan for adults (aged 18 to 40), following the Ministry of Health Clinical Principles Framework and international best-practice guidelines.
  • Your appointment with Dr Johnston will be 1 hour long and include assessment, diagnosis and prescription (if appropriate). This can include the prescribing of methylphenidate, dexamfetamine, and lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse). Special Authority applications for funded medications are completed as part of the service.
  • Follow-up reviews - $79: We can continue to see you for follow-up appointments (a standard 15 minute MedOnline GP appointment) to continue, review and modify your medication over time.
  • Alternative, if we diagnose ADHD and you opt to proceed with medication, we can send a report to your own GP, so they can continue the medication if they are agreeable.
  • Important Points to note:
    • Our service is currently only avaliable available for patients aged 18-40.
    • If you have significant cardiovascular, neurological or other mental health issues, we may require further information from other specialists before we can prescribe ADHD medication. In such cases, a further follow up review appointment ($79) would be required, after the required information is received, to arrange your prescription.
    • Complex cases with significant co-existing conditions (such as bipolar disorder, psychosis, severe personality disorders, or active substance misuse) should be seen by a psychiatrist.
